Renewal Requirements
Professional Teaching Certificates are valid for five (5) school years and require renewal.
Six (6) semester hours of college credit are required to renew.
Additional credits are required if you maintain more than four (4) areas of certification.
Endorsements do not require renewal credits, except as outlined below in item (2).
(1) All certificate holders must complete a minimum of one (1) semester hour in teaching Students With Disabilities (SWD) 20-Hour Beacon Educator (SWD)
(2) Educators holding any of the certifications/endorsements listed below must completed a minimum of two (2) college credits in Reading 40-Hour Reading Requirement Information Flyer

- Elementary Education (K-6) or (1-6)
- Prekindergarten/Primary Education (Age 3 - Grade 3)
- Primary Education (K-3)
- English (5-9), (6-12) or (1-6)
- Middle Grades Integrated Curriculum (5-9)
- Reading (K-12)
- Reading Endorsement
- English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) (K-12)
- Exceptional Student Education (K-12) (NOW REQUIRED FOR 6/30/25)

(3) Educators holding Educational Leadership certification must complete a minimum of 1 college credit in Florida’s Education Leadership Standards (FELS) Orientation to the FELS (20-Hour Online Course)
How Many Inservice Points are Equal to a Semester Hour?
One (1) semester hour = 20 inservice points.
Renewals may be college credit, inservice points or any combination thereof.
Where Can I Take Courses?
The Professional & Staff Development website has links to on-demand modules that can be completed to earn a variety of renewal inservice credit.
College courses may be taken at any accredited educational institution that awards bachelor's degrees and above.
How To Renew?
You'll apply online with the Florida Department of Education for your renewal. There are instructions readily available to you on the QUICK LINKS page.
Complete the Notice Form and Payroll Authorization Forms and send those to the Human Resources Department for processing. Please see DISTRICT FORMS for the necessary paperwork.
